San Francisco Ballet welcomed back the Hamburg Ballet for two special performances at the
War Memorial Opera House in February, to much critical and poplar acclaim.
The full-length production
of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, choreographed and staged by Hamburg Ballet
Artistic Director John Neumeier lived well up to its advanced promotion.
“My relationship with John extends
back to my days as a dancer at the Harkness Ballet and I’m thrilled that we’re
able to present his excellent company for two performances during our current
season,” said SF Ballet Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer Helgi
Tomasson. “It’s always a pleasure working with John and Hamburg Ballet and I
know that Bay Area audiences will love this charming and unique production of A
Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
Neumeier’s popular adaptation of the
beloved Shakespeare comedy was premiered by Hamburg Ballet in 1977 and features
stage and costume design by Jürgen Rose, with music by Felix Mendelssohn and
György Ligeti. Upon its premiere in America, The New York Times
proclaimed the production “…[a] truly spectacular treatment of A Midsummer
Night’s Dream.” Last February, as part of the Company’s 2013 Repertory Season,
Hamburg Ballet appeared on the Opera House stage in Neumeier’s Nijinsky,
and in 2010, SF Ballet presented the United States premiere of Neumeier’s The
Little Mermaid.
