Bay Area Cabaret Wowed by Skinner...Season Continues

The Bay Area Cabaret season in the Venetian Room in the Fairmont Hotel continues with the fabulous Puppini Sisters April 17 (5:30 p.m. show is sold out; 2 p.m. show added); Bay Area Teen Idol 2015 on May 15; Liz Callaway and Ann Hampton Callaway’s From West Side Story to Wicked on May 22. Visit www.bayareacabaret.org or call 415-927-4636.

Emily Skinner, The Tony-nominated actor (Side Show) has wowed San Francisco audiences  with performances 42nd Street Moon’s Do I Hear a Waltz? and
American Conservatory Theater’s A Little Night Music.

Her San Francisco concert debut as part of the Bay Area Cabaret season was, however, was a revelation. Accompanied by John Fisher on piano, Skinner seamlessly conducted a history lesson of the great American songbook.

“Everybody’s Girl” from Steel Pier and Good to Mama from Chicago (both from the song writing team of Kander and Ebb, set the tone.

She also explained that Mae West’s first film role was in the sublime “Sex,” and that her signature tune “Come Up and See Me Some Time” came from a show titled “Catherine Was Great.” Go figure.

We especially enjoyed her rendition of Noël Coward’s “Why Do the Wrong People Travel?” from Sail Away.

Bay Area ferry commuters – Bay Crossings readers – may wonder the same thing. Why use anything but the most sophisticated mode of transport to go anywhere? Sail Away, indeed.
